Investing in Southend Schools: Every Child Deserves the Best Start

Amina Hassan|10 February 2026

Education is the greatest gift a society can give its children, and in Southend it is also one of our greatest responsibilities. With schools serving a diverse and growing population, the challenge of ensuring every child gets an excellent education has never been more important. The Southend Liberal Democrats are committed to investing in schools, supporting teachers, and giving every young person the chance to succeed.

Class sizes in many Southend primary schools are above the national average, making it harder for teachers to give each child the attention they deserve. We are campaigning for additional primary school places, particularly in rapidly growing areas like Southchurch and Shoeburyness, and for targeted funding to reduce class sizes where they are most overcrowded. Early intervention works best in smaller groups.

Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) provision is an area where Southend must do better. Too many families face agonising waits for assessments and inadequate support once a need is identified. We want to see increased investment in SEND specialist places, more training for mainstream teachers in inclusive practice, and better coordination between health, education, and social care services so that children with complex needs get joined-up support.

Mental health in schools is no longer a niche concern; it is central to every child ability to learn and thrive. The pandemic left many young people in Southend struggling with anxiety, isolation, and disrupted learning. We are calling for a counsellor in every Southend school, early intervention programmes for at-risk pupils, and teacher training in mental health first aid.

Sixth form and further education options in Southend are too limited. Many young people leave the borough for college or university because local opportunities do not match their ambitions. We want to expand post-16 vocational and technical pathways, strengthen links between schools and local employers, and explore the potential for a new Southend technical college focused on the skills our economy actually needs.

School buildings matter. Many of Southend schools are housed in ageing buildings with poor ventilation, inadequate IT infrastructure, and limited outdoor space. We are pressing for a borough-wide school condition survey and a phased capital programme to modernise buildings, improve energy efficiency, and create learning environments that inspire rather than constrain.

Finally, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom. Southend young people benefit enormously from access to the seafront, nature reserves, cultural venues, and community activities. We want to see stronger partnerships between schools and local organisations, more outdoor learning opportunities, and a Southend Youth Pass that gives young people discounted access to sport, arts, and transport across the borough.
