Southend economy is at a crossroads. The decline of traditional retail, the lingering effects of the pandemic on hospitality, and the cost-of-living crisis have all taken their toll on local businesses. Yet the borough also has enormous strengths: a thriving creative sector, world-class cultural venues, a growing tech scene, and a seafront that draws millions of visitors each year. The Southend Liberal Democrats believe that with the right support, Southend economy can bounce back stronger and fairer.
The High Street is the heart of any town, and Southend needs urgent attention. Rising business rates, aggressive parking enforcement, and competition from online retail have hollowed out too many shop fronts. We want to see business rates reformed to ease the burden on small retailers, more free parking periods to encourage footfall, and a proactive empty shops strategy that matches vacant properties with entrepreneurs and community groups.
The seafront is Southend crown jewel and its biggest economic asset. We support investment in the pier, the arcades, and the adventure island area, but we also want to see a year-round seafront economy that does not depend entirely on summer tourism. That means better indoor attractions, conference facilities, co-working spaces with sea views, and winter events that bring people to the front whatever the weather.
Small businesses are the backbone of Southend economy, employing thousands of local people. We want to see a dedicated small business support hub in the town centre, offering advice on grants, digital skills, marketing, and exporting. Too many brilliant local enterprises fail because they lack access to affordable expertise, not because their ideas are flawed.
The creative and digital sectors are growing rapidly in Southend, drawn by the coastal lifestyle and improving connectivity. We want to nurture this trend with dedicated creative workspace, high-speed broadband guarantees, and partnerships between local colleges and industry. A Creative Southend initiative could put the borough on the map as a destination for designers, developers, and content creators.
Apprenticeships and skills are essential for a resilient economy. We are calling for closer ties between Southend employers, colleges, and the council to ensure that training programmes match real job opportunities in the borough. Every young person leaving school should have a clear pathway to a meaningful career, whether through university, an apprenticeship, or entrepreneurship.
Tourism remains vital to Southend economy, but it must be sustainable tourism. We support initiatives that spread visitors beyond the busiest summer weekends, promote Southend nature and heritage as well as its entertainments, and ensure that tourism revenue flows to local businesses rather than national chains. A Southend Tourism Ambassador programme could help tell our story to the world.
