Safer Streets in Southend: Our Plan for Community Policing

Sarah Mitchell|22 January 2026

Everyone in Southend deserves to feel safe in their home, on their street, and in their community. While crime rates in the borough are not the highest in Essex, anti-social behaviour, drug-related crime, and the fear of crime itself all erode the quality of life for too many residents. The Southend Liberal Democrats believe that the best approach to community safety combines visible policing, prevention, and partnership.

Visible neighbourhood policing is the foundation of public confidence. Residents want to see police officers and PCSOs who know their patch, recognise faces, and build relationships with the community. We are campaigning for the restoration of dedicated neighbourhood policing teams for every ward in Southend, with officers assigned long enough to build trust and gather the local intelligence that prevents crime before it happens.

Anti-social behaviour is one of the most common complaints raised at our street surgeries. From noisy neighbours and vandalism to drug dealing and intimidation, ASB ruins lives and destroys community cohesion. We support stronger powers for the council and police to tackle persistent offenders, including closure orders for problem properties and targeted support for vulnerable individuals whose behaviour is driven by addiction or mental health issues.

Violence against women and girls is a national emergency, and Southend is not immune. We are calling for better street lighting in poorly lit areas, more CCTV coverage around transport hubs and the seafront, and a partnership approach between the police, council, and local venues to make Southend nightlife safer. Every woman should be able to walk home without fear.

Youth crime prevention must be a priority. Too many young people in Southend drift into criminal behaviour because positive alternatives are not available or affordable. We want to see expanded youth clubs, sports programmes, and creative activities in every neighbourhood, particularly in areas with higher rates of youth offending. Investment in young people today prevents crime tomorrow.

Domestic abuse remains a hidden epidemic in every community, including Southend. We support the continued funding of local domestic abuse services, the expansion of refuge provision, and better training for police, social workers, and health professionals in recognising and responding to coercive control. Nobody should suffer in silence.

Finally, we recognise that community safety is about more than enforcement. Well-designed streets, active neighbourhood watch schemes, clean and well-maintained public spaces, and strong community organisations all contribute to a safer Southend. Our approach treats safety as a shared responsibility, with the council, police, and residents working together to keep our borough secure.
