Carole helping TWIG to grow!

How green was our Council?

Carole Mulroney at Two Tree Island

ON THE SCENE: Carole at Two Tree Island after a meeting with TWIG

Well, whilst the joint administration of Independent, Lib Dem and Labour was in place it was greener than ever before.

We introduced Southend Energy, enabling all residents to cut their electricity and gas bills. We also accelerated a programme to replace street lighting with more energy efficient LED lighting, securing a loan from the Green Investment Bank. But that won't happen again - the Tory Government has withdrawn from that Investment Bank which fostered green initiatives, allowing private enterprise to take over - and we all know where that will lead.

In the Lib Dems we pride ourselves on having a green ethos and Peter and Carole have spoken out strongly about air quality, especially near our schools, and have worked hard within local groups fostering green initiatives.

Recently Carole has been working in the community with local stakeholders to try and bring them together to improve Two Tree Island.

There are a lot of problems with the Island and she was fed up with the bad press it was getting. The Two Tree Island Group (TWIG) is in its infancy but in adding its voice to the Council members and officers, police, Essex wildlife Trust and others we are already seeing improvements.

Dog bins and litter picks are proposed and there is an army of volunteers who want to clean up the Island to improve it for residents and visitors.

If you would like to join them please get in touch with Carole.
