Southend Lib Dems: Southend West MP has questions to answer

Southend Liberal Democrats questioned the fitness of local MP Sir David Amess to represent his constituents following a press release issued today that questioned the widespread rape and sexual assault accusations currently being raised against Harvey Weinstein, a US film producer.

The bizarre intervention, which said claims against Weinstein were "dubious to say the least", was subsequently retracted, with the MP blaming his staff for its release but Lucy Salek, Lib Dem Spokesperson for Southend West, said serious questions remained unanswered.

"I am relieved the press released issued by Sir David Amess MP was retracted - it was completely unprovoked victim-blaming. Doesn't he or his office have better things to do with their time? What led his staff to believe this would accurately reflect his views and how does he explain away quotes directly attributed to him? He needs to take urgent action to reassure his constituents that he would believe and support victims of assault in Southend".

Some one in five women will be a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime, this suggests that at least 7,000 Southend West constituents will be subjected to such abuse.
