Leigh Lib Dems’ Concerns on Post Office Move

July 11, 2017 11:42 AM
In Leigh & West Leigh Focus: July 2017

The good news is that there will continue to be a Post Office in the centre of Leigh. Fears spread by the Labour Party and trade union supporters that there would be no Post Office have turned out to be scare-mongering.

But Lib Dems are worried that the new Post Office will be too small and queues will stretch on to the street and block up the convenience store.

The Post Office propose to move the post office from Rectory Grove to Select Convenience Store opposite the Library in Broadway West which will be re-vamped. This is part of a programme across the country to move main post offices into shops. The full Post Office will be open on roughly the same hours as now, and a limited service will operate 8am-8pm Monday to Saturday and 9am to 5pm Sundays.

Carole asks - can this Post Office fit into this shop?

We have no details yet of when or where the Post Office will hold a a promised public forum with the proposed floor plan for people to view and comment on.
Until 26 July 2017 you have the chance to tell the Post Office what you think of their proposals:

Cllr Carole Mulroney writes:
"This is a very small convenience store. Don't get me wrong, I live nearby and it is a very handy and well-run shop, but it will have much less space than the current Post Office in Rectory Grove. The move should be the other way around.

Leigh is growing and we need expanding, not contracting, local services. We've all stood for ages in a queue while someone posts umpteen parcels; I can foresee queuing out the door onto a much narrower pavement hampering pedestrians, buggies and the disabled being hemmed in between queuing customers and close packed cars. It would be even more congested if the post boxes are to be sited there - at present the Post Office doesn't know where they will go as they don't own them.

So my concerns are:

  • is this shop really big enough to cope and
  • how can this be a better solution for Leigh which it is supposed to serve?

There needs to be a better deal.

Please tell the Post Office what you think through their public consultation and email me at cllrmulroney@southend.gov.uk to let me have your views
