NHS? If you want the best, pay

Carol Mulroney Echo Letter 17th May 2017

A letter from Cllr Carole Mulroney to the Echo:

Dear Sir
I too attended the meeting at Westcliff last week, because like everyone else in Southend should be I am appalled at what is proposed.
The Success Regime is all about saving money, so it is not just a fight for our A & E, but a fight to prevent the inevitable domino effect of reducing our local services at the hospital.
[Omitted from the Echo print:]

The fact that neither the Tory MPs nor Borough Councillors turned up speaks volumes.

Southend is not like Basildon or Chelmsford, we are comparing apples and pears. We are a holiday resort and neither of those towns have the huge influx of people we get over a concentrated period every year and neither has an airport on its doorstep.
But what would we have to offer resident and visitor alike if there should be the need for emergency treatment - a downgraded A & E and other services and a tortuous, potentially life threateningly long ride to Basildon.
It just isn't good enough when Accident and Emergency are bywords for 'immediate action'.
The Lib Dems could not have made it clearer, if we want the best service from our NHS we have to pay for it, something many people are prepared to do.
So the Tories should stop trying to dupe the British public with the big figures they claim to be pouring into the NHS - because as we have learnt this last week - they just don't compute.

Leader of Liberal Democrats, Southend Borough Council and ward Councillor for Leigh Ward
