Southend Liberal Democrats today announced their Parliamentary Candidates for the 2017 snap General Election.

Humanitarian worker Lucy Salek will take the fight to David Amess in Southend West and businessman Peter Gwizdala will build on his 2015 campaign in Rochford and Southend East.

The party is set to capitalise on its recent surge in membership, with activists ready to fight a positive and passionate campaign. Chairman Bob Howes believes their message of economic stability over Hard Brexit and more money to vital services will be popular on the doorstep:

"We have been talking to people in Southend and the message is coming across loud and clear - they want us to hold the government to account on Brexit and get more money to the NHS. We are the only party that can deliver on both."

Lucy Salek is a conflict specialist working for humanitarian charities across the world. As a champion of people's rights, she will fight to protect services Southend desperately needs. Speaking about her campaign,

Lucy said:

"Conservative cuts are hitting ordinary people hard and the prospect of a Hard Brexit with no opposition will make it worse. I will focus on the services that matter most - social care for the vulnerable and the elderly, schools to ensure all children have access to a great education and the NHS, which cares for us from cradle to grave. The Liberal Democrats are the challenger to the Conservative Party in Southend West. With Labour moving hard left and the Conservatives to the right, we're the ones speaking up for those who will be left behind when the impact of Brexit hits".

Peter Gwizdala

In Rochford and Southend East, businessman and former Regular Army Officer Peter Gwizdala will fight on the promise to oppose the Conservatives' reckless Brexit strategy and chronic underfunding of services. Peter said:

"This election is a huge opportunity for voters to send a message. Local people may have voted to leave the EU, but many did not and many more did not vote for the extreme form of Brexit that Theresa May has imposed on us. Labour has backed her all the way. Leave's cynical pledge of £350m for the NHS has crumbled. We are the only party with a costed plan to fund the NHS. We are the only ones to protect our economy and local jobs from a hard Brexit. I believe people need a final say over what comes next."

Peter's campaign priorities are keeping a full A&E at Southend Hospital, with more money to fund the NHS, mental heath and social care so that decisions like this are not needed in the future. He will challenge on Brexit and fight for investments that bring secure long-term jobs to the area. He will be talking to parents about funding cuts to local schools.

Southend Liberal Democrats Chairman Bob Howes said:

"We are thrilled Lucy and Peter will represent us in Southend. They are the ideal candidates to voice the liberal open and tolerant messages that are missing from politics today."
