Statement on the Proposals for A&E Services in Essex

April 10, 2017 10:45 PM

This article was released prior to further details being released and our support for the Save Southend A&E campaign is 100%

But for the interest of complete transparency here is the original article from 10th April.

A revised statement is available here: Support Saving Southend A&E

Original Article

While Southend Liberal Democrats accept the clinical evidence in favour of establishing a specialist A&E trauma centre, we have deep concerns about proceeding on these lines while NHS finances are so severely stressed.

In particular we are concerned that the ambulance service, which is already stressed in Essex, will be not be expanded sufficiently to cope with the longer journeys and that there will not be additional "first responders", who are crucial in saving lives.

We are also concerned that there will not be sufficient hospital and infrastructure investment to cope with the additional movements.

The Liberal Democrats are the only Party prepared to raise taxes to finance an improved NHS and we doubt that Conservative and Labour politicians would put in sufficient resources to make the proposals work safely. Until we can be given cast iron guarantees on these points we will oppose the proposed changes to A&E, and you can to at: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/194057
