Liberal Democrat Council Group Leader has called Southend's Bavarian Christmas Market a disaster!
Having visited Christmas Markets in Bremen and Oldenberg, Germany, in early December he was disappointed and saddened to return and see the poor effort being made in Southend to brighten up our town centre at Christmas over the last three weeks.
At the last Council meeting the LibDem group made it clear that they supported the administrations idea of a Festival of Festivals in the Town throughout the year. Cllr Graham Longley also added that any festival had to be free standing and that the Council could not just link four or five French markets across the year and call them a festival.
The LibDems believe that if the so called Bavarian Market recently held in the High Street was any example then the administration was wasting their time and the taxpayers money organising the event.
The recent market often had little more than five stalls, the "german" content was limited, there was little more than food serving stalls, the High Street was left littered and in a mess.
Having visited two German markets early in December Cllr Graham Longley was certain that the Bavarian market in Southend had little to do with Bavaria. The beauty of a real German market is something to behold and is clearly what people pay to see on super coach journeys run by local companies.
"If we can't match the real thing then the administration should forget it" said Cllr Longley.
