Cllr Graham Longley Leader of the LibDems on Southend Council has called on the Town Clerk to look at the possibility of reducing the length of time the Council take to pay invoices in the present credit crunch climate.
"Business - particularly local small businesses - are struggling in the current economic climate and any help we can offer", he said, "could stop some of them going out of business."
Currently Southend aim to pay all their bills within 30 days. Cllr Longley has suggested a reduction to 21 days in the short term - say for a period of 6 months and then review the situation. Southend's good house keeping has avoided them getting caught in the Iceland problems but others have not been so lucky.
Local businesses are the life blood of the Southend community and we should be prepared to assist where we can said Cllr Longley
