Just where is the Tourist Information Centre?
The very question Cllr Longley & Cllr Lewin asked themselves recently when they spotted the Council's own sign at the back of the Royals Shopping Centre pointing up the High Street away from the seafront.
Having walked all the way to the top end to where the Odeon Cinema is, just as any tourist would do seeing the sign when coming off the trains at Southend Central Station, they were unable to find the tourist Office.
Of course they did not expect to find an office because the Southend Tourist information point is on the seafront inside the Pier entrance and not up the High Street at all. "This is typical of the signs in the seafront area of this town," said Cllr Ted Lewin who went on to say "I've been calling on Southend Council to improve their signage for a number of years now and it's about time they sorted themselves out".
Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Southend Council, Cllr Graham Longley added "Tourist's will be extremely upset to be directed up the High Street only to find they are going the wrong way, especially if they have young children with them." He called on the Council to correct this blunder saying that "it has been some years now since the Tourist Information Office in the High Street closed - it is really unacceptable that people are still being directed to the wrong place. Tourist's will be less likely to return to Southend if they are not assisted when they get here."
